Top gear is a magazine show all about cars and vehicles. They put these cars through certain tests and challenges to see which car will come out on top. They also review cars and give valuable information to the audience about the components of the vehicles.  Originally, top gear on the BBC was hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond but the BBC refused to renew Clarkson’s contract so now it is hosted my Paddy McGuinness, Freddy Flintoff and Chris Harris. For this I am going to be talking about the show when hosted by the original 3. 

There has been 27 seasons and 399 episodes of top gear with Jeremy Clarkson as host and each episode has was 1 hour long. The production company for the show is BBC studios and it was shown by the BBC. The genre of the show is automotive entertainment but also has elements of other genres in there like comedy and education. For the majority of the seasons, top gear was based in a studio where the audience surrounded the host which is very unique. The hosts were sat next in front of a screen so they can react to the pre recorded scene for the episode. The studio is quite dark so it makes the cars stand out more when they are showcasing them. There is a a variety of camera shots and angles for example, in the studio there will be a long shot of when they’re sat down and when one of them speaks there will be a close up on the speaker. Although it was set in the studio the main entertainment came from pre recorded activities which they showed and reacted to in the studio. When they are outside there might low angles to make the car look impressive and when they’re driving, there might be a truck and dolly so you can see the car driving side on. On the show they brought on many famous guests such as Gordon Ramsay, Simon Cowell and Tom Cruise. Every time a celebrity came on they made them drive around a track while timing to compare to other celebrities times. In the end the fastest celebrity around the track was Matt LeBlanc at a speed of 1.42 minutes. The target audience for top gear would be for adult men as stereotypically men are the ones most interested in cars. This however doesn’t mean women or younger boys can watch this as they’re was no foul language and it could be educational for a younger audience. Top gear is aimed a plethora of races and cultures and also showcases cars that would interest the working class and a more wealthier audience.
